Drug prescription pattern in primary healthcare centers in southwest Nigeria. A cohort analysis of primary health workers prescription records

Introduction: Rational use of Drugs is the prescription and dispensation drugs to appropriate patients in doses, for required period at lowest cost them their community. Irrational refers inappropriate which include too many (polypharmacy), unnecessary overuse antibiotics injection where oral drug suffices. A step towards preventing irrational document it a study such as this, so that corrective steps can be taken. Methods: This was cross sectional cohort analysis prescribing records primary health care workers from eight facilities. Result & Discussion: There were 513 prescriptions 2, 590 facilities;206 (40%) two comprehensive centres 307(60%) six basic clinics. 206(40%) diagnosis-based prescriptions, while not based on diagnosis. About 426(83%) contain 87(17%) had no antibiotic prescriptions. 395(77%) contained injectable 118(23%) did any drug. Conclusion: The average number per proportions injectables this higher than WHO recommendations. These values equally studies. Healthcare clinics more prescribed counterparts centers.
